Laser vision correction

What is Laser Correction?

Laser vision correction is a procedure designed to eliminate the dependence on glasses or contact lenses. The procedure is performed with excimer laser which is used to correct the shape of the cornea, thus eliminating refractive errors of the eye (nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism). Laser correction with excimer laser is the most innovative and successful refractive surgery.

Is everyone suitable for laser eye surgery?

You can receive a precise answer to the question only after a thorough medical examination from an ophthalmologist from Den Eye Clinic. During the examination the ophthalmologist performs a series of precise measurements of the ocular parameters with the most up to date medical equipment. Depending on the results of the examination your ophtalmologist will tell you if you are suitable for laser eye correction. Some of the requirements you need to know in order to be suitable for laser eye surgery are the following:You have to be at least 18 years old;

– You must be at least 2 years with no power change of your eye glasses/lenses;

–  You must not have eye infection or injury, degenerative or autoimmune diseases;

– Pregnant or breastfeeding women could not undergo laser eye surgery because their hormones could affect the procedure;

– You have to be willing to quit using eyeglasses and/or contact lenses.

How safe is laser eye surgery?

TRANS-PRK, LASIK, LASEK and PRK are proved to be some of the safest laser surgical procedures available today. The laser used for these kind of procedures have high technology sensors and various systems that assure the best quality and the highest precision of the surgery.

How painful is the laser eye correction?

 Usually laser eye correction is completely painless. During the procedure you might feel slight pressure, which disappears after the end of the manipulation.

 Types of laser refractive eye surgery

  1. Surface laser vision correction

PRK (photorefractive keratectomy) / LASEK (Laser Assisted Epithelial Keratomileusis) / TransPRK  (Transepithelial Photorefractive Keratectomy) are types of surface correction in which the excimer laser works at the surface of the corneal stroma. The difference is in the way that the corneal epithelium is peeled off.

– During LASEK the epithelium is moved away and after laser ablation it is returned to its place;

– In PRK the epithelium is removed completely and a slightly longer recovery period is needed;

– TransPRK is the newest non-contact method, which allows removal of the epithelium and vision correction to be carried out simultaneously and entirely by the laser in a single step. The innovative technology of Den Eye Clinic excimer laser allows the so-called SmartSurfACE laser correction to be performed. This is the newest and the most effective version of non-contact TransPRK procedure with micropulse technology. The perfection of the medical laser allows the procedure to be performed within minutes and the results can be visible right after the end of the surgery.

             2. LASIK (Laser-Assisted In situ Keratomileusis)

LASIK (Laser-Assisted In situ Keratomileusis) is a lamellar refractive laser manipulation in which excimer laser ablation is performed in a lamellar corneal flap.

How to prepare for laser eye surgery?

First you should undergo a full evaluation from your eye surgeon which will tell you if you are suitable for surgery with excimer laser. If you wear soft contact lenses it is essential that you take them out at least 2 weeks prior to having your first eye examination. In case you wear ridgit contact lenses you need to remove them 4 weeks before your first examination. During that time it is recommended to wear glasses. This is necessary in order to restore normal corneal status and not to compromise the examination results.

What happens on the day of the procedure?

On the day of manipulation we recommend not to use makeup, perfume, deodorant and face cream or any cosmetics and detergents on your face. The laser correction lasts about 10 minutes, and the entire stay at the clinic is about an hour.

Results

The improvement of the eyesight can be noticed right away after the surgery. The patient goes back to his/her normal daily routine after 2-3 days. The whole recovery process is individual and it can take from a couple of days up to 2-3 weeks. It depends on the kind of surgery that was performed.

The decision to have laser correction should be taken after you have been well informed. Successful laser correction is based on professionalism, responsibility and cooperation between the patient and the doctor.
